I used to fear change—until I realized that resisting it only caused unnecessary suffering. Life is in constant motion, and the more we accept that, the less terrified and anxious we feel when it comes time to make necessary changes.
You might notice a friend endlessly venting about a job or relationship they dislike—or maybe you’ve been that friend. Often, the barrier isn’t the situation itself but fear: fear of the unknown, fear of losing control. Clinically, this fear of change is called metathesiophobia. It’s the anxiety that arises when the unfamiliar feels overwhelming or unmanageable.
So how can we shift from paralysis to embracing change? Here are five strategies:
1. Identify the root cause
Understanding why change scares you is the first step. A therapist, coach, or healer can help uncover patterns from childhood, trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, or self-esteem issues that fuel this fear. Recognizing the source of your anxiety can reduce its power over you.
2. Journal your thoughts
Put pen to paper and explore your feelings about change. Ask yourself:
- Why can’t I leave this unhappy relationship?
- What would actually happen if I did?
- Why am I afraid to shift careers or try something new?
Your answers will likely reveal recurring limiting beliefs. Fear isn’t the enemy—it’s a signal pointing to what’s holding you back.
3. Repeat this mantra
“What I am not changing, I am choosing and allowing.”
This simple reminder reinforces that you always have the power to change—fear is simply energy. Nothing is blocking you except yourself.
4. Start small
Take incremental steps toward change. It could be as simple as commuting a different way, trying a new café, or experimenting with a fresh hobby. These small shifts train your mind to handle bigger life changes with confidence.
5. Prioritize self-care
When fear feels overwhelming, ground yourself through activities that nurture your mind and body: a massage, meditation, or a walk in nature can restore calm and clarity.
Remember: change is inevitable—it’s the only constant. Embracing it, rather than fearing it, frees you to live more intentionally and courageously.
